Canadian artist Kathryn MacNaughton (1985) lives and works in Lisbon. Her colourful, exuberant paintings interweave an effortless, gestural approach that incorporates elements of abstract expressionism and figurative suggestions into one poetic, bold statement. 

MacNaughton is interested in the collision of colour, movement, and form in which each piece is a journey and form of discovery. Each piece exhibits her deft control of materiality through a free-form spontaneity and rigorous attention to the process as it unfolds. The Lisbon-based artist responds to actions in real-time, finding rhythmic patterns through a technique that includes both gesturalism and improvisation.

Hers is a delicately balanced and intuitive process. “Each pouring of paint is a form of navigation. It’s a terrain of uncertainty, knowing precisely when to halt or trust my instincts to push the boundaries further. I am constantly acting and reacting to what’s happening on the canvas. It’s quite physical. In a way it’s almost spiritual, being able to think and see without a predetermined image, I’m reaching toward unlimited possibilities.”

L’artiste canadienne Kathryn MacNaughton (1985) vit et travaille à Lisbonne. Ses peintures colorées et exubérantes entrelacent une approche naturelle et gestuelle qui incorpore des éléments d’expressionnisme abstrait et des suggestions figuratives en une seule déclaration poétique et audacieuse.

MacNaughton s’intéresse à la collision des couleurs, du mouvement et de la forme, où chaque œuvre devient un voyage et une forme de découverte. Chaque pièce témoigne de sa maîtrise habile de la matérialité, à travers une spontanéité libre et une attention rigoureuse au processus qui se déploie. L’artiste, basée à Lisbonne, répond aux gestes en temps réel, trouvant des motifs rythmiques grâce à une technique qui allie gestualisme et improvisation.

Son processus est délicatement équilibré et intuitif. « Chaque versement de peinture est une forme de navigation. C’est un terrain d’incertitude, où il faut savoir précisément quand s’arrêter ou faire confiance à son instinct pour repousser les limites davantage. Je suis constamment en train d’agir et de réagir à ce qui se passe sur la toile. C’est assez physique. D’une certaine façon, c’est presque spirituel : pouvoir penser et voir sans image préétablie, je tends vers des possibilités illimitées.
