The Neapolitan sixth is a chord that has been introduced into an established harmonic structure in music. Without disrupting the balance of a composition, it subtly alters its perception by introducing tension, displacement and an unexpected colour.

Bringing together artists from different generations and geographies, The Neapolitan sixth uses this musical figure as a starting point to explore what operates as a deviation within an image. This could be a discreet presence, an ambiguous form, an unexpected colour or a detail that unsettles perception and shifts the viewer’s gaze.

The works presented do not depict an extraordinary world. Drawing upon familiar forms, figures, landscapes, objects, architectures or mental spaces, each one introduces a subtle instability. Something appears to have shifted. The images remain accessible while resisting immediate interpretation.

Moving between figuration and abstraction, narrative and silence, the artists in this exhibition share a sensitivity to processes of transformation, appearance and displacement. Their works inhabit a territory where reality becomes charged with a quiet strangeness, and where certainty gives way to more open forms of perception.

Like the musical figure from which it borrows its title, the exhibition is structured around gentle tensions rather than rupture. The works enter into dialogue through resonance, contrast and invisible correspondences, forming an ensemble in which balance emerges precisely through the introduction of the unexpected.

A sound composition created for the exhibition accompanies it and extends the reflection on variation, deviation and transformation.

La sixte napolitaine désigne en musique un accord étranger introduit au sein d’une harmonie établie. Sans rompre l’équilibre de la composition, elle en modifie subtilement la perception, créant une tension, un déplacement ou une couleur inattendue.

Réunissant des artistes issus de différentes générations et géographies, l’exposition Sixte napolitaine emprunte cette figure musicale comme point de départ pour explorer ce qui, dans l’image, agit comme un écart. Une présence discrète, une forme ambiguë, une couleur inattendue, un détail qui trouble la lecture et déplace le regard.

Les œuvres présentées ne décrivent pas un monde extraordinaire. Elles s’appuient sur des formes familières (figures, paysages, objets, architectures ou espaces mentaux), mais chacune d’entre elles introduit une légère instabilité. Quelque chose semble avoir glissé. Les images demeurent accessibles tout en résistant à une interprétation immédiate.

Entre figuration et abstraction, narration et silence, les artistes réunis dans l’exposition partagent une attention particulière portée aux phénomènes de transformation, d’apparition et de déplacement. Leurs œuvres habitent un territoire où la réalité se charge d’une étrangeté discrète et où les certitudes laissent place à des formes de perception plus ouvertes.

À l’image de la figure musicale dont elle emprunte le nom, l’exposition s’articule autour de tensions douces plutôt que de ruptures. Les œuvres dialoguent entre elles par résonances, contrastes et correspondances invisibles, dessinant un ensemble où l’équilibre naît précisément de l’introduction de l’inattendu.

Une composition sonore réalisée pour l’occasion accompagne ce parcours et prolonge cette réflexion autour de la variation, de l’écart et de la transformation.
